We had a wonderful stay in Fayetteville! Our last evening, we elected to dine out at Antonella’s Italian Ristorante in downtown Fayetteville. The restaurant had good rating and read it fills up quickly so we all met at 4:00 at opening time; Denise, Dennis, Jeanne, Elizabeth, Carson, and us.
No one was aware that is was the evening of A Dickens Holiday Downtown Fayetteville. The restaurant is located on Hay St. and throngs were gathered along the street, many dressed in period costumes; some carolers, some actors, some just dressed to be part of the event. There were many vendors and exhibitors lining Hay and
Franklin streets which were closed off for the event. Luckily for us, we could view this from our table inside the restaurant and it seemed like a wonderful, fun event. It was agreed that we would return next year to make a day of it!
Saturday we were off to Savannah for two nights then onto Florida. Our stay in Savannah was rather uneventful but restful. We arrived around 4 in the afternoon, later than expected due to some bumper-to-bumper traffic through South Carolina. It was one of those instances where you’re never able to determine what caused the many slowdowns. While you might expect a disabled vehicle, an accident, emergency vehicles or a trooper off to the side of the road, the traffic would magically start rolling at normal highway speeds with no obvious cause for the slowdown. This continued, on and off, for quite a while.
Since we departed Southwick, we have been listening to a book series on Audible, the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny. Louise Penny is a Canadian writer and the setting for this series is a small town in Quebec called Three Pines. On the legs from Southwick to Fayetteville, we listened to the first book, Still Life. Not only has it made the time pass quickly, it has been very enjoyable. The banter can be quite funny at times and I get visions of Inspector Jacques Clouseau from the Pink Panther, from time to time. We started the second book on our way out of Fayetteville, A Fatal Grace. Mag had posted on social media looking for some recommendations and that’s where she got the idea for the Inspector Gamache series; Trice and another friend has made the recommendation.
We had never visited this campground in Savannah before but we were able to go for a walk in the evening after our arrival and dinner. I challenged Mag to a game of ping pong in the rec hall during our walk. A family was celebrating the 20th birthday of a sailor who just got back from boot camp. It appeared as though they just finished eating dinner and were lighting the birthday candles. We joined in “Happy Birthday,” which was fun but Mag was a little jilted when a slice of cake was not offered. We batted the ball around for a half hour and then continued our walk. The rain started that evening and continued throughout the day Sunday, mostly just a light rain but, it was cool, wet & cool, which keep us indoors. We attended mass at St. Anne Catholic Church, a large church with nearly every pew filled, our only excursion that day.
Early Monday morning, I darted out to top off the fuel tank and grab a few grocery items at Krogers. Mag stayed
behind to get the trailer packed up and also a meeting with friends. When I returned, I started on the outside preparations and packing. We planned a 9:00 a.m. departure and, surprisingly, we manged to get off on time. Mag packed up lunch of PB & J/AB & J for the trip, along with some snacks. Most of the drive was good except for some heavy traffic along Route 95 in Georgia. When we were nearing our destination, Sanlan RV & Golf Resort in Lakeland, Florida, our two GPS units were not matching for the secondary roads to the site. It ended up being a combination from both that got us to the resort safely but it can be a little nerve-racking when hauling the trailer. We have to be ever mindful of overpasses, bridges, and the like.
We arrived around 4:00 p.m., later than we expected, despite our early departure. We got right to it, setting up and, in the midst of that, we got a call from Harrison. Not a frequent occurrence, so we took a break and had a nice visit. After a bit, we returned to the setup and promised to call back afterward, which we did. We had some leftover homemade pizza for dinner with salad. Normally we would head our for a walk after dinner to check the campground but, for whatever reason, we decided to just hang out and scout the campground after breakfast. Sanlan RV & Golf Resort is a fairly large facility with a mix of residents and visitors. One section is named Mobile Home Park, another named Annual Sites, and more named, Premium, Deluxe, Standard, etc, which is more familiar to us. This morning, Tuesday, we heading out on our Recon mission and will report our findings. ♥
